Queen Mary, as senior bencher, attended the centenary celebrations of the opening of the great hail and library at Lincoln's Inn. Her Majesty planted a tree in the gardens.—London. October 31. The last meeting for the year of the Public Speaking Circle of the Canterbury Women's Club' directed by Mrs R. J. McLaren, was held on Tuesday, evening. An address on China was given by Mrs L. G. Pocock. The president (Mrs A. E. G. Lyttle) thanked Mrs Pocock for her address and for her help during the year. Pupils of the secondary department of the Akaroa District High School recently entertained . parents, former pupils, and friends at a social and dance. Guests were welcomed by the headmaster (Mr W. Tindall). Songswere sung by girls of the school. Miss A. .Greenwood was the accompanist. Dance music was provided by Mrs L. Bailey, and extras were played by Misses I. Richfield, R. Lennon, and W. E. Cairns. Mr J. Stewart was master of ceremonies. The lady editor of "The Press" gratefully acknowledges receipt of four pairs of men's socks for UNRRA, from an anonymous friend, also a packet of used stamps from an anonymous friend.
