HOUSING SCHEME FOR TRENTHAM

SITE FOR 1100 UNITS MR FRASER OUTLINES PLAN (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, September 22. “Although, in the past, Trentham Camp has served its purpose admirably, the Government considers it is no longer entirely satisfactory for training for modern warfare,- and arrangements are In hand to provide training facilities in other localities. The ordnance stores will remain at Trentham. for the time being,” This statement wag made, by the Prime Minister (the Rt Hon. P. Fraser) to-day, when referring to plans for an extensive State housing scheme on the Trentham military camp area. He said the site at present occupied by the military authorities would accommodate at least 1100 house units, while an additional area embracing all the usable land in the valley behind Trentham would provide for more than 700 units, ■ making a total of more than 1803 dwellings, said the Prime Minister. He added that the whole area was ideal for the building of a residential district. The camp buildings were being examined so that whatever was suitable would be used for temporary dwellings, which, however, would be demolished as the permanent scheme went forward to completion. Mr Fraser said that the scheme was a substantial instalment of the Government's plans to build large numbers of houses as quickly as possible and would assist very materially in. providing homes for returned servicemen.
