FLOOD DAMAGE IN CANTERBURY
* DETAILS OF ASSISTANCE GIVEN (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, September 21. Information on the assistance given by the Government to those who suffered flood damage in Canterbury and Otago this year was given by the Minister of Finance (the Hon, W. Nash) in the House of Representatives to-day in response to a question from Mr R. G. Gerard (Opposition, MidCanterbury). Mr Nash said that generally grants were given only to meet damage to personal effects, and loans were given to those farmers who were unable to arrange loans privately. Mr Nash said that in the Timaru, Temuka, and Kaitangata areas there were applications for 166 grants, and 164 grants were made. There were 17 applications for loans and 16 were granted. Six of these had not been taken up. A loan application which had not been granted was still under review. At Kaiapoi. there were applications for 51 grants and 49 had been granted. There had been one loan in this district.
