REPORT ON SOCIAL SECURITY (Rcc. 9 p.m.) LONDON, Sept 20^ ••Sir William Beveridge will leave shortly for India to prepare a report on social security and cognate questions for the Government, says the “Manchester Guardian.” “The possibility of his undertaking the mission was discussed during the life of the Coalition Government. The mission will take him out of British politics for a considerable time. “Sir William Beveridge was born in Bengal, where his father was a civil servant. A total of 500.000 unemployed is predicted in the Bombay Presidency alone within a few months.” NON-STOP FLIGHT FAILS bombers forced to LAND IN. CHICAGO (Rec. 8 p.m.) CHICAGO, Sept. 19. The non-stop flight by three Superfortresses from an airfield in Hokkaido (Japan) to Washington failed when the planes were forced to land in Chicago for fuel. The planes, which bucked strong head winds, completed about 5995 miles of the 6500-mile journey, , , .... The Superfortresses landed within an hour of each other. They will proceed to Washington after refuelling. RETURNING N.Z. SERVICEMEN 1900 DUE TO LEAVE ENGLAND (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, September 19. Nearly 1900 New Zealanders will sail in the Andes for home next Sunday They will include 1500 men ot the R.N.Z.A.F., the majority of whom are being repatriated after serving in the European theatre, and 370 men of the N.Z.E.F., who are former prisoners ° f There are still about 300 men of the Nz E F who are former prisoners, left in England, but they are staying at their own request. About half that number are studying on attachments or bursaries, while otners are working in the Fernleaf Club, the Post Office, •and the Repatriation Centre in Kent, which is now being used as a reception group and transit centre. Another big draft of R.N.Z.A.P. men is expected to leave England for New Zealand next month. The Andes is sailing via Suez.
