STEINER AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION SYDNEY, September 20. By winning his game against M Green in the final round of the Australian Chess championship. Lajos Steiner (New South Wales) secured the title. Second place was shared by Wade, Purdy, and Lazare. Wade and Purdy met in the last round and it was a Homeric struggle. Both players were alive to the Importance of the game and they strained every nerve, but Purdy gradually Improved his position and won. The final scores wereSteiner 12, Wade. Purdy and Lazare each 10',4. Green 9, Koshnitsky 814, Goldstein and Klass each 8. Crown and Watson each 714. Shoebridge 6V2. Salm 514, Vaughan 5, Miller and Harris each 414. McGrath 2.
