LOSSES OF SHEEP THROUGH SNOW
“MUCH LIGHTER THAN ' EXPECTED ” Losses of sheep in the recesnt heavy snow in Canterbury are ‘‘much lighter than was expected.” This is clearly shown by a summary prepared by the Department of Agriculture in Christchurch after surveys throughout the province and on the West Coast by 10 of the department's inspectors. No direct snow losses were reported for the West Coast or the low country near Timaru or Kaikoura. Losses in other North Canterbury districts varied from 3 to 7 per cent. Christchurch district losses were about 3 per cent., as were those for Banks Peninsula and the Leeston district. Losses in Mid-Canterbury were reported as “small.” Only the normal fosses were reported from South Canterbury back-country areas.
