COAL MINERS’ WAGES

* INCREASE GRANTED <P.A.) AUCKLAND. July 30 Increases in coalminers’ rates ot pay have been ordered by the Coalmines Council, which sat in Wellington on July 12. Piecework rates are raised by 7£ per cent., and contract truckers’ and day and weekly men’s wage rates by Is 6d a shift. The increases are all retrospective to May 7. Giving its decision, the council recommends that the additional costs ol production involved be met by means of a subsidy from the Government or an increase in the selling price of coal, according to the Government’s policy.The increase to each class of worker is estimated to cost 6d a ton. The total increase is expected to be of Is a ton.
