INDEPENDENTS RETAIN OXFORD SEATS (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, July 30. The election results for the Oxford University seats in Parliament _ have been announced. Two Independents, Sir Arthur Salter and Mr A. P. Herbert were elected. Professor G. D. H. Cole, who was a Labour candidate, was defeated. A. P. Herbert, the author and humorist (“A.P.H.," of "Punch”) and Sir Arthur Salter were the sitting members. G. D. H., Cole, the economist, sociologist, and- author of detective fiction', is Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory at Oxford. RELEASE OF TROOPS FROM A.I.F. ABOUT 120,000 MEN IN SIX MONTHS (Rec, 7 p.m.) CANBERRA. July 30. Releases from the A.I.F. will reach their full flood in September, according to an official statement. It is hoped to release 20,000 men in September, and then to maintain that rate for at least six months. By March, 1946, the programme of special releases should have been completed. Army leaders believe that 120,000 fighting troops and 40,001 lines of communication troops will be out of the Army by next April, and that 15,000 men will be discharged from the R.A.A.F, Men who are being specially released for the housing programme do not come in any of these categories, but are in a class of their own. to be released as soon as possible. Other industries to be specially catered for are primary production industries. to which it is hoped that at least 30,000 men will go before next March. None of the men released under the latest scheme will come under manpower direction. They will be allowed to undertake any jobs they want. It is expected that all the police constables now in the armed forces will be released at once. Financial exoerts point out that the immediate saving to the State by these discharges will be at least £35,000,000 up to February, 1948, and may reduce the war budget of the nation by £100,000,000 bv September, 1046.
