DESTRUCTION OF RABBITS

* The North Canterbury executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at a recent meeting decided to send to the Hurunui Rabbit Board and to the Dominion executive the following remit: “That this meeting, representing the Hawarden-Waikari branch of the Farmers’ Union, considers that the present system of rabbit destruction by the Forestry Department, Balmoral, virtually amounts to rabbit farming, and that the Government be requested to take immediate steps to compel the State Forestry Department to destroy rabbits in the same manner as nearby farmers are forced to do by the Hurunui Rabbit Board.” Expulsion from Labour Party.— Mr John Leverseed, the first Common Wealth Party member of Parliament, who joined the Labour Party shortly before the General Election and lost his seat at Eddisbury, Cheshire, was to-day expelled from membership of the Eddisbury Labour Party “on the grounds of conduct prejudicial to the best interests of the party.” He was told he could appeal to the national executive of the party against the decision if he desired.—Rugby.
