COMMISSION ON LICENSING

—*— • APPOINTMENT OF PERSONNEL TELEGRAM FROM N.Z. ALLIANCE ' ” The Press Special Service DUNEDIN, July 28. The following telegram has been sent to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) by Mr H. Milner, general superintendent of the New Zealand Alliance:— “You are reported as saying in the House that you had thought it desirable that the Licensing Commission should include some members from both trade interests and the New Zealand Alliance with knowledge of the intricacies of the trade. I would point out that there is no member from the New Zealand Alliance, although there are at present two members representing trade interests. During your absence overseas the most pointed objection was made to the Minister, of Justice The fact is that on your request for nominees of the New Zealand Alliance we submitted the names of three persons, only one being a member of the Alliance but none of these was appointed. The second was a practising solicitor, and the third a retired police officer of long and w T ide experience and high rank. “With reference to the member referred to in the House I would draw your attention to the fact that while every other member has so far consistently attended the sittings of the commission, he was absent from the sittings once or twice in Wellington and on numerous occasions in Auckland, and has attended no sittings at Rotorua, Te Kuiti, or. Christchurch. While his ‘knowledge of the intricacies of the trade’ will doubtless enable him, in spite of his non-attendance at the commission to influence the report and legislatipn that may be brought before the Legislative Council of which he is a member, in our view this gentleman should cease to be a member of the commission.’*
