TOWN MILK SUPPLY

♦— CONFERENCE OF PRODUCERS further improvements SOUGHT (P A.) WELLINGTON, July 28. While appreciative of improvements granted, delegates to the national conference of the Town Milk Producers Federation expressed opmion that the decisions announced by the Minister of Marketing (the Hon. B. Roberts) would not secure an adequate supply of good quality town milk. They instructed the executive to continue negotiations with the Government for many improvements still demanded. Mr D. R. Hoggard (Wellington) explained the significance of the proposals made by the Minister and by the Director of the Milk Marketing Division. The administration allowance, he said, was too low, much less than even the modest id a gallon asked for by the executive. He claimed that the proposals concerning surplus milk were totally inadequate based as they were on day-to-day production. Quotas should be calculated on a longer period than that proposed by the Director of the Marketing Division. Mr W. Marshall (Auckland) said the Milk Marketing Division had a lot yet to learn about town milk affairs. It consumers were to receive an adequate milk supply, producers must receive an adequate reward. Acceptance oi contract conditions concerning surplus milk might aggravate existing shortages, particularly in the South Island. If associations felt compelled to submit to penalties, it was stated, they should not" accept one of more -than Id a gallon, and should protect themselves against natural disasters by appropriate exceptions. It was further decided that no penalty be agreed to till a satisfactory price was arranged, and one which made due allowance for loss on a reasonable amount of surplus milk. - The conference approved of the draft of a submission shortly to be made to the Minister on the whole subject of the national price structure, hr order to give producers the opportunity to plan their production programmes, the Government will be asked that in the future the price for the new season should be announced not later than May 31. The following were elected as members of the executive:—Messrs J. J. Maher (Wellington), W. Marshall (Auckland), P. T. Jamieson (Palmerston North), K. K. Montgomerie (Auckland) N. Peacocke (Hamilton), Ri T. Raines (Nelson), C. J. McFadden (Christchurch), J. E. Ewing (Oamaru), and G. T. Bathgate (Dunedin). More Motoring The announcement on Saturday of an increased petrol ration for August and the brilliantly fine weather yesterday had the effect of bringing hundreds of motorists on to the roads yesterday afternoon. With the expectation of a more liberal allowance, most obviously felt that the occasion permitted outings for pleasure, and roads on the Cashmere Hills and leading out of the city bore a fairly constant stream of cars.
