ARBITRATION COURT

♦ CASES HEARD YESTERDAY A claim for a penalty for a breach of the Bakers and Pastrycooks and Labourers’ award said to have been made by L. A. Woodward, Ltd., brought by the Inspector of Awards (Mr C. P. Collins) was heard yesterday at a sitting of the Arbitration Court. The point.ln dispute was whether work performed by certain workers in the company’s automatic bakery entitled them to be paid as journeyman bakers or as bakers’ labourers. After hearing evidence, the Court rereserved its decision. Mr C. S. Thomas appeared for the defendant company. An application for an interpretation otf two clauses of the Bakers’ and Pastrycooks' award was also heard. Legal argument was presented by Mr H. F. Butland (for the employers, J. H. Templeton and Son), Mr M. C. Gillard (secretary of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Bakers’ Union) and Mr Collins. Decision was reserved.
