DANGER FROM MINES
FRENCH SEASIDE RESORTS CLOSED (Rec. 12.5 am.) PARIS, July 20. Because of danger from mines, French seaside resorts are closed to holiday-makers. The French coastlines, particularly the Atlantic coast, are literally riddled with mines. They are not only near the sea; children playing in the woods near Strasbourg are killed every day by exploding mines, and cattle are killed in fields which have not been properly “demined.” ~ Experts estimate that more than 1,000,000 mines.have already been destroyed, but there are millions more. German prisoners are being put on the job of dealing with them. Although the beaches are closed, people storm the trains (in an endeavour to get away from the heat and restrictions of the city. Queues stand all night awaiting the opening of the ticket offices, and passengers crowd into the corridors and refuse to move.
