ALLIED CONTROL

GERMAN PATENT OFFICE TAKEN OYER (8.0. W.) • RUGBY, July 19. The American Control Council in Berlin to-day took over the German patent office to safeguard its records until a multipartite council is established. The senior German official was ordered to suspend all patent office functions except the placing of records in readiness for future use. The office is housed in a 700-roomed building. The 200 German officials who were on duty when the Americans arrived are being held for questioning while the office is examined. All the patent records were found intact in a basement, though the building itself was extensively damaged by bombing last February. A correspondent in Berlin says that “conservation of lumber” was the official reason given by the British military authorities for the removal of six feet Russian proclamations in the German language posted at 100 yard intervals along the main roads in the British zone. A similar action is being taken in the American zone. The hoardings, which are mpunted on red painted poles, generally carried excerpts from Mr Stalin’s speeches, the most popular being: “Experience and history show that Hitlers come and go, but the German people and the German State remain.” The control administration in the Russian sector of Berlin has abolished 120 bankrupt insurance organisations which were sponsored by Hitler, and has replaced them with an all-embrac-ing insurance scheme, says Reuter’s correspondent in Berlin. It is compulsory for all employed citizens to insure their families with the new organisation, which is based on equal contributions from employer and employee. All Berlin doctors, dentists, and medical specialists will serve on the central panel of the new organisation which will be primarily concerned with sickness and accidents and the insurance of invalids and aged persons.
