DUNEDIN NORTH BY-ELECTION

POLLING TODAY Polling in the fourth by-election since the General Election in September, 1943, will take place to-day in Dunedin North, in which the only contestants are Mr N. H. Jones (National) and Mr R. Walls (Labour). The byelection was caused by the death of Mr J. W. Munro, M.P., who had represented the electorate continuously from 1928, Mr Munro, as a sitting member, was defeated in 1925 by the late Mr H. L. Tapley. The electorate extends to Port Chalmers and the southern‘boundary of the Oamaru electorate, represented by the Minister of Health (the Hon. A, H. Nordmeyer) and embraces North East Valley. Woodhaugh Valley, and part of Maori Hill. , . . Of the vote of 14,822 recorded in 1943, Mr Munro, with 8038 votes, had a decisive win over the National candidate (Mr A. L. C. Cassie), who polled 5240 votes, and other candidates. Several Ministers, including the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P, Fraser) and Labour members have taken part in the campaign in the last week in support of Mr Walls, k and in the last few days there has been a migration of National Party speakers, including the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) and Messrs K. J. Holyoake (Pahiatua), W. S. Goosman (Waikato), W. Sullivan (Bay of Plenty), and J. T. Watts (Riccarton). In the by-elections held since the last General Election, the status quo of representation in the House has been preserved, the Opposition having won Hamilton and Awarua, Seats made vacant by the deaths of the party’s nominee, and Labour having scored in Western Maori, formerly held by a Labour member.
