SNOW ON CITY STREETS
THREE MILLION CUBIC YAttDS estimate by works chairman An estimate that 3,000,000 cubic yards of show had fallen on the streets of Christchurch was mdde last evening by Cr. W. P. Glue ichairman of the City Council’s works committee). He | remarked that thb figure would give citizens some idea of the vast problem which faced the engineering department in clearing even the central area. Cr. Glue said that 100 tons of snow had fallen over every acre of the city. Superlative work had been done by council employees and by the employees on private contracting. Every available truck had been requisitioned, together with other plant, to handle the mammoth problem of clearing the city streets of snow. Plant had been sent to suburbs to clear the snow and ice at the most troublesome and busy corners. Two new dump trucks had been purchased for use at the Halswell quarry, but their first job would probably be to-day on shifting accumulations of snow, said Cr. Glue. Making his estimate of the snowfall on streets, Cr. Glue said the city had 280 miles of streets, and the falls varied from seven inches to 15 inches. He had averaged the fall at 11 inches to one foot.
