CONTRAST IN AIR TEMPERATURES
♦ METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE REPORT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 15. The Dominion Meteorological Office states the abnormal weather conditions in the south which produced 14 inches of snow at Harewood resulted from a combination of a cyclonic depression which came from the north-west Tasman Sea and a cold front associated with a system of depressions which advanced un the South Island, There was an extreme contrast in the air temperatures, the air behind the front being particularly cold and that in the northerly current comparatively warm for this time of the year. The contrast made rain conditions worse than normally expected. From midnight to 8.30 a.m. on Saturday the barometer showed an exceptionally rapid drop of half an inch to the low level of 28-85 inches. At 850 a.m.. with the advent of southerly pressure, it commenced to rise even more steeply than it had fallen. The temperature in Wellington dropped 12 degrees between 8.30 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. bn Saturday. The Post Office reported severe dislocation in communications with the South Island. All sports in Wellington, except the races, were cancelled.
