IMPORT CONTROL RELAXED
CERTIFICATE SYSTEM ELIMINATED The elimination of the system of issuing certificates of recommendation for imports from the United States and Canada was announced by the Minister of Supply (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) yesterday. During the European war, he said, importers placing commercial orders in those countries were assisted through the Ministry of Supply. The issue of the certificates was instituted because the authorities of both those countries required official assurance' that New Zealand’s requirements were essential for maintaining the war-time economy Also, through the shortage of cargo space, the certificates were used for allocating shipping priorities. With the end of the European war the system was not needed, and had now been eliminated. With imports from the United States of America, importers should all inform United States suppliers of the New Zealand import licence numbers, so that they could be quoted on applications for export permits, as the United States Foreign Economic Administration refused to validate applications not showing Import authorisation of the country of destination; and buyers send to their United States suppliers complete information regarding ultimate end use where orders were for capital equipment and other critical materials,. With imports from Canada, it would be necessary for the New Zealand importer to quote the import licence number to the Canadian exporter and to request the latter to quote such number to *he New Zealand Supply Mission, Ottawa, in application' for shipping space. Should any cases arise where difficulty is encountered in obtaining exi port releases, the importer should com'munlcate with the Ministry o£ Supply.
