SIGN OF TAKAHE
♦ DAMAGE BY HOODLUMS REPORTED Damage to the Sign of the Tahake by hoodlums on Sunday was reported by Cr. G. D. Griffiths to the- City Council last evening, when he asked if any progress had been made towards appointing a watchman at the building. Damage was being done by hoodlums on Sundays, when they ran riot, said Cr. Griffiths. “My answer is that no progress has been made,” replied Cr. M. E. Lyons (chairman of the finance committee). "Various orgenisations were contacted to see if they could suggest a suitable man, but it has been found impossible to find one. There is a complication in the problem—there are no living conditions worthy of the name we can give to a watchman, no sewer, no gas, no stairs in the place. Probably we might do worse than buy a suitable Army hut and get a single man to live on the premises at night or Sunday afternoons. The damage Cr. Griffiths mentions has not been reported to the City Engineer, but the position is being watched." •.
