LYTTELTON NEWS
* BOROUGH COUNCIL Electricity consumers in Lyttelton will shortly be placed upon a one-meter rate, the same as is used by most supply authorities In Canterbury, instead of the present system of two or more meters. At the meeting of the Borough Council last night, the chairman of the electricity committee. Cr. R. E. Cairns, presented a report on the proposal to alter the present system of charges. The report recommended that the one-meter system be used The average monthly charge paid by each consumer for the previous 12 months would be the basis for the new charge, all additional units being charged at heating rates. The new scheme would release meters to the value of at least £IOOO. The report was adopted, and the council decided to apply to the Price Tribunal for permission, to alter the system of charges. , The council also decided to place In the hands of the police a report from the Electricity Department that damage had been done to street lamps and fittings by boys with pea-rifles. The secretary of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Mi A. Li Burke, wrote regarding the inadequate pressure cf fresh water at the graving dock. As a consequence ships frequently waited until they reached the next port before taking in water and revenue was thus lost to the borough. The complaint was referred to the waterworks committee to report. A request that the council take over a section of 38 perches, between Cornwall road and Canterbury street, was received, from the bursar of Christ's College. Mr Donald Dobson. The section had been used for many years by residents of Cornwall road, as a short-cut, the letter stated, and, with the building of more State houses In the future, .its use as a thoroughfare would be increased. Cr. W. T. Foster said the section had been used as a thoroughfare for about 70 years. His motion, that the section be acquired and that the authorities of Christ’s College be thanked for its offer, was carried. ' Removal of Baches Baches on the council property at Corsair Bay are to be removed and no further baches are to be permitted on that property, according to a decision made by the council last night. The matter came before the council when the terms of ,a new lease of the oroperty at Corsair Bay were being drawn up. Some councillors expressed the opinion that the baches should be removed and the enclosure thrown open to the public. A motion that no further baches be permitted was moved, but an amendment that the present baches be removed, was carried. Cleary, Justices of the Peace, with disorderly behaviour on Saturday evening. Each was convicted and fined £l.
