CRIMINALS FOUND ON PREMISES

MAGISTRATE’S WARNING (P.A.) AUCKLAND. July 6. A sequel to a police raid on premises in the city alleged to have been used as a common gaming-house, was heard before Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M.. James Rudolph Jurlevich, aged 38 years, a labourer, pleaded not guilty to a charge of being the occupier of premises, and Jack Petrovich, aged *4B years, a former gumdigger, denied a charge of assisting in th®. management of the house. Pleas of guilty were entered by S7 men found on the premises. . .. . ~ . . After the Magistrate intimated that he would convict, a detective said gaminghouses had been causing considerable trouble to the police. When the premises were raided, quite a few \vell-kno\\ n criminals, with bad criminal histories, were found in the room. “I look on this as a pestilential evil, said the Magistrate. “Once a. community allows this sort of evil to continue, it is undermining Its whole social structure. This Court will not countenance the continuance of this class of gaming-house in any shape or form. Unless there are very exceptional circumstances the maximum penalty will be imposed in all cases.’ Jurlevich was sentenced to six weeks Imprisonment with hard labour.
