“Rehabilitation is not a work of the department only—it is the task of. the people of the Dominion also, ’ said Mr A. N. Campbell (rehabilitation officer for South Canterbury) in an address to a public meeting at Waimate, He emphasised that the war was by no means over, and members of the. general public should lend their assistance in many ways. Allowances should be made for the men who were returning. “They all have war neurosis of a kind,” he said. . In his address Mr Campbell dealt with the work of the Rehabilitation Department, and explained the various types of financial assistance available for former servicemen and women.. He gave particulars of the facilities provided for the training of servicemen in various trades, and explained the system of preferential allocation of State rental houses. Mr Campbell summarised the problems of rehabilitation as being (1) shortage and urgency of housing, (2) lack of suitable businesses, and (3) the poor quality of farms coming on the market. The Mayor (Mr W. P. Boland) presided, and Canon A. H. Acheson moved a vote of thanks to, the speaker.
