PART OF HARVEST STILL IN PADDOCKS I There was much criticism at the ,an- . nual meeting of the .Ellesmere branch of the Farmers’ Union about delays m getting grain and other produce away from the farms, members stating that a considerable part' of last season’s harvest was still out in the paddocks where it was threshed, and that there was risk of serious loss during wet weather. The general opinion was that the main cause of the delays was a shortage of railway trucks, and. that other contributing factors were a lack of sufficient motor-trucks, the short working week, and a shortage of labour for unloading at stores in Christchurch. .. . . , Mr F. H. Greenwood said he had been reliably informed that the railway workshops at Addington had built two dredges for the West Coast when the men should have been employed in repairing waggons. Another speaker said he had seen as many as six motortrucks from the Ellesmere district at the Addington market, yet farmers could not get their grain out of the paddocks. . . It was pointed out that while farmers were being urged to grow more wheat and other produce, they were not given facilities to get the produce off the farm. Manure and lime deliveries. it was stated, were also subject to delays. > Messrs G. L. Barnett, P. B. Birkett, and R. G. Allan were appointed the union’s representatives to * interview members of Parliament, together with representatives of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
