FIXED FRIGES FOR FISH

, RECONSIDERATION WANTED

RESOLUTION BY OTAGO FISHERMEN (P.A.) DUNEDIN, May 31. Fishermen from the Taieri Mouth, Karitane, Port Chalmers, and Dunedin, at a meeting which was also attended by the retailers, discussed the new prices gazetted and operative from June 4. The following resolution was carried; “No fishing or retailing will be carried on under the hew orders pending a satisfactory agreement and reconsideration by the Government. An urgent reply is awaited," . Mr A. J. Black, who presided, said that the fishermen were concerned at the possibility that there would be no fish for the public, but under the new order it would be impossible to operate except at a loss, As yet the Fishermen’s Society had received no official notification from the Government regarding the new prices. PROTESTS BT RETAILERS AND FISHERMEN Holding that the margin of profit allowed to both fishermen and retailers was “out of all reason,” the Christchurch branch of the Dominion Fish Retailers’ Association decided yesterday to enter a protest against; the prices fixed by the Price Investigation Tribunal; ' “The position, as we understand it, is that no fish will be available for Tuesday’s market,’’ said Mr P. W. Sim, a past president of the Christchurch branch of the Retailers’ Association. Monday would be a holiday in the city; it was the day fixed by the Price Tribunal for the operation of the new orders. ' A definite protest had been made by retailers in Christchurch at a meeting yesterday, said Mr Sim, and a letter had been sent to the tribunal. The profit allowed retailers was one on which they could not possibly operate. ‘ Timaru fishermen, said Mr Sim, would hold a meeting this afternoon. The fishermen at Lyttelton had already lodged their protests, and it appeared that the price orders would not operate next week, because no fish would be supplied by the fishermen.
