FINANCIAL LOSS REPORTED A loss of £529 17s 3d was disclosed in the report "to the recent annual meeting of the Christchurch Young Men’s Christian Association. The street collection was £166 '■ less than the previous year, and the cost of supplies for the hostel and maintenance charges had increased. The president (Mr W. G. V. Fernie), in paying tribute to the association’s staff, said that they had carried on cviilian work together with military work. The Optimists’ Club was an important section of the association, he said. Mr F. H. Sandall, who retired from the directorate of the association recently, after 23 consecutive years as a member, was elected a life membei of the association. More than 400 boys had been organ ised into 44 study clubs during ttu year, stated the report, and they bad competed in a variety of subjects. An ambulance unit was part of the boys department The annual camp, held at Wainui this year, had been a success, 246 campers attending. The average age of the boys attending the camp was 13, and several boys had been assisted financially. Work for servicemen was mentioned in the report, and it was stated that 16,566 men had been provided with week-end sleeping accommodation during the year. Meals served had totalled 8735. The gymnasium had a roll of 659 persons, and a further 175 players had joined the basketball league. BIRD SHOW N.Z. AND SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Claimed to be one of the largest bUa shows in Australia or New Zealand, the seventy-eighth annual exhibition of the Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club opened yesterday in the Christchurch Fanciers’ Hall, Selwyn street, Addington. With about 1500 entries, competition was slightly less than in previous years, many exhibitors being engaged for a show at Dunedin next week. All the judges commented that throughout the war years a consistently high standard had been maintained. Judges were;— Poultry: Old English game, Mr F. Gobbe; bantams, modern game, Peklns, Mr Gordon King; Old English game and junior classes, Wyandottes, and any other variety, Mr W. H. Turvey (Oamaru): black rosecomb, Mr R. W. Griffiths.
