DEATH OF CHILD ■ ♦ '■ PARENTS REFUSE TO GIVE EVIDENCE CORONER’S VERDICT At an Inquest Into the death of the Infant child of Jessie Valentine Scott at Christchurch on April 11, heard by the Coroner. Mr E. C. Lewey, at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the first witness called, James William Scott, a farmer, living at Kurow, pleaded privilege. The Coroner asked on what grounds privilege was claimed. After a statement had been read that he and Jessie Valentine Scott had come to Christchurch to consult George Settle, chemist, and after an objection by Mr J. K. Moloney, representing the mother of the child, the. Coroner ordered that witness be stood down. When Jessie Valentine Scott was being questioned by Detective-Sergeant F. J. Brady, Mr Moloney raised an objection, and the objection was upheld by the F. J. Brady said that after a report had been received on the death of the Infant Scott, he had interviewed Jessie Valentine Scott, who had given birth to a child. At this stage, Mr Moloney objected to the statement being read, but the Coroner overruled the objection. ‘ Detective-Sergeant Brady said that in the presence of Detective t T. J. Knowles he had interviewed James William Scott, who said that for the last five years he had kept company with his present wife. They were married on April 4, 1945. She had become pregnant in July or August. The prospect of having a child so soon after the wedding worried them both a great deal. On April 6 he and his wife had visited Bettlfe’s rooms, and had interviewed a man he took to be Bettle. When the man asked him hew long his wife had been pregnant Scott said he thought it might be three or four months. Bettle gave him some pills and a bottle of medicine, for which he charged £2. Again he visited Settle’s, and told him that his wife was suffering severe pains in the back. Bettle had said, “Then there’s nothing .to worry about. That’s a good sign. Scott said he arrived back at the boardinghouse at 11.45 p.m., and found his wife lying on the floor of the room. There was a newly-born baby on the floor. He tried to awaken the proprietors of the house, but failed. He later telephoned Dr A. D. Anderson, who, in answer to a statement that it was a maternity case, said he was surprised to hear of a maternity case there. Dr. Anderson came * straight round, and by this time his wife, who had fainted, had regained consciousness. When he had asked his wife if the child had moved, she had replied, "Not that I noticed When Dr. Anderson arrived he attended .to Mrs Scott. He (Scott) had moved the child and placed It on a suit of pyjamas in a corner. The doctor immediately telephoned the ambulance, and the three went to the hospital. The hospital authorities took charge of his wife and the Cl Scott said in his statement to the police: “We decided that we would say that we had wanted to have the child, and again after the miscarriage did take place we discussed the matter and agreed to say that we were absolutely Innocent about the incident coming on. It was only after the miscarriage did take place and 1 realised that the child was so close to maturity that I decided to tell the truth about the matter to the police.’ The second occasion that he took his wife to see Bettle .was on the evening of April 10. He had purchased medicine from Bettle solely for the purpose of terminating his wife’s pregnancy. Detective-Sergeant Brady said he had handed the medicine and the pills to the Government Analyst, and his report, produced. showed that the, medicine was Just a vegetable laxative and the pills merely a blood tonic and not the type used as an abortlfacient. To Mr Moloney, Detective-Sergeant Brady said he did not give Scott or his wife any warning as to the purpose of the interview. He had said that he was making inquiries into the death of a Mr’ Moloney: ’The medicine supplied would not be of an abortifacient nature. Detective-Sergeant Brady: It appeared to be ordinary medicine. „ Mr Moloney said it was an unfortunate case attended by long and contracted Confinement. There was no doubt that inter-cranial fracture was the cause of death. The persons concerned did not realise the coming event, and .were not so well informed on the facts of life*as were cIW people. It was an extraordinary happening and there was nothing to advance except ignorance. The Coroner said that in view of the refusal of both mother and father to give evidence he would return a verdict ciuthe medical information supplied, that the child died of heart failure following intercranial hemorrhage. FINDINGS OF CORONER The Coroner, Mr E. C. Lewey, at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, returned the following verdicts:— Phyllis Hamilton Gaines, died on March 12 from hemorrhage of the brain following degeneration of arteries; Eli Wltta Hewlnson died of heart failure following myocardial degeneration of the heart; Keith Gordon Robertson died on April 15 from multiple injuries received when an aircraft at Wlgram aerodrome crashed to the ground; Errol Murray Turner met his death on March 6 by drowning following on valvular diseases of the heart; Lilian Arena Elliot committed suicide b.v drowning in the sea at Taylor’s Mistake on March 13; Maurice William Dunnage died on April 8 from heart failure associated with pneumonia; Myrtle Chapman collapsed at her home on March 29 and died of heart failure.
