THE ARCHBISHOP’S QUESTIONS
Sir,—ln his sermon at the thanksgiving service,. Archbishop West-Wat-son asked:. “Why had God preserved us? What ./as His purpose for us, and what His purpose for the British Empire?” Almost in spite of ourselves the hand of God had delivered us for some future purpose. The Archbishop is a scholar, and presumably a Bible student. Why then did he not give the obvious and true answer to ■ his own questions? A study of the Old Testament, together with the researches of a number of eminent historians and research workers during recent years, reveals beyond question that the British race, Including the United States and the Norwegians, are in very truth the descendants of the people originally appointed by God to carry out his purposes. Then why does the Archbishop say we “dare not think ourselves a chosen people”? We most certainly have not chosen ourselves.— Yours, etc., SCRUTATOR. May 18, IM6.
