NAVAL OFFICERS DECORATED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 15. Advice has been received that His Majesty has approved the awards of a bar to the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant-Commander Leo Patrick Bourke, D.S.C., R.N.Z.N.R., and the Distinguished Service Cross to Tem-porary-Sub-Lieutenant William Kerr Webster, R.N.Z.N.V.R.. for services m successful attacks on enemy U-boats. Lieutenant - Commander Bourke joined the New Zealand Division of the Royal Naval Reserve as a sublieutenant in 1932 and before the outbreak of war vlas an officer m the mercantile marine. In 1944 he was awarded the D.S.C. for services in attacking a U-boat His wife, Mrs H. H. Bourke, lives in Auckland. Sub-Lieutenant Webster was bom in New Plymouth and before entering the Royal New Zealand Navy was a law student. His mother is Mrs M. C. Webster, of New Plymouth. “This is no ordinary by-election," said the Minister of Health (the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer), when speaking in support of the candidature of Mr C. A. Barrell (Labour) in the' Hamilton by-election campaign. The result he added, would have a tremendous effect on the outcome of the next general election.—(P.S.S.).
