The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr E. H. Andrews) has received a grant from art union profits of £6OO for the relief of distress. “After all, what happened when the Germans realised that they were losing their first world war? In the classic term of one of them, they started to ‘organise sympathy,' The bragging, the hautiness and the sabre rattling, all that was called off; instead they pictured themselves as decent, quiet little folk who had been wantonly attacked by a mob of predatory warmongers. Which is, of course, precisely what they are doing now.” said Brent Wood recently when giving “War Review” on the Propaganda Front for J3.8.C. overseas listeners. He went on; “In both her major wars, Germany’s propaganda has passed through three main phases. The first phase has been the phase of threats; with the Germans at the height of their power and confident of victory, they nave addressed their appeal to fear. The second phase has been the phase of mischief-making, when Germany, faced with an unbeatable alliance, has tried to divide it by appeals to mutual jealousy. The third and the last phase is the appeal to pity, and that comes only when the Germans scent defeat.”
