RICCARTON RACES

GREAT AUTUMN WON BY FIRST IN SUCCESS FOR PENSACOLA AND BEAU CHEVAL

The weather was again fine for the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's -autumn meeting on Saturday, and records in attendance and turnover for a Great Autumn Day were established. The sum of £123,422 was handled as against £91,579 10s on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £31,842 10s. The total for the meeting was £285,776 10s. compared with £184,854 last year, an Increase of £70,922 10s. The track was in excellent order after a beneficial rainfall on Friday morning, and some fast times were recorded.

The withdrawal at 11.35 a.m. of Typhoon from the Great Autumn Handicap caused much disappointment, and in his absence, First In was Installed one of the shortestpriced favourites in the history of the long-established race. She justified her position by a narrow but impressive win, and thus substantiated her claim to be one of the best staying marcs produced in the South Island for some years. The big field .got away on good terms, the slowest to move being Vafort. Signal Officer, and Foxhaven. Bridge Acre piloted the field into the back stretch from Lord Nuffield, Lowry Bay. Sister Sal, First In and Lance Wing, with Royal Hae, Signal Officer and Vafort in the rear. Lord Nuffield went to the front approaching the home turn and led into the straight from Bridge Acre, First In, Sister Sal, Lowry Bay, Immediate, Palfrey and Signal Officer. The run home had not long been in progress before First In showed out from Immediate and Palfrey, with Lowry Bay at the head of the remainder. A challenge by Immediate was shortlived, but Palfrey, with a solid effort, bridged a big gap to be only a head away from First In at the post. Lowry Bay finished on to beat Immediate for third place by a head, and then came Foxleap. Signal Officer, Foxhaven, Sister Sal, Lord Nuffield, Royal Rae, Hormuz, Vafort, Lance Wing, Bridge Acre and Gamble in that order. Challenge Stakes The two-year-olds Confusion and A 1 Sirat carried most money in- the Challenge Stakes, but both suffered at the. start, and lost sufficient ground to settle their chances over a seven furlong journey. The race was a triumph for the three-year-old candidates, as Beau Cheval drew to the front a furlong from home, and went on to record a very easy' win from Golden Souvenir, which wore down John Gay, the leader into the straight, over the final stages. A 1 Sirat finished on Into fourth place a length away, with Gigli, Confusion and Cinderella following in that order. Beau Cheval had the race well in hand when he took over, and won with a gOod deal in reserve. Golden Souvenir made a game effort, but was no match for the winner. John Gay ran a sound race, but the.distance found him out. It was unfortunate that the two favourites met early trouble, but on the manner in which Beau Cheval completed his task they would have had to do something outstanding to have beaten him. Pensacola, a strong fancy for the Templeton Handicap, was one of the early leaders, and was first on to the course proper from Whitley, Sing Sing, Foxcatcher, Burberry and Whackie. Donegal. Bay drew, up to Pensacola inside the distance and had him fully extended at the §ost, but the favourite held her off. Sing ing was finishing on into third place, a length in front of Foxcatcher, with Burberry and Whackie next. Pensacola owed his victory to his smart beginning, the useful advantage he had at the distance standing him in good stead when called upon to withstand Donegal Bay’s brilliant challenge. Sing Sing showed improvement, but Burberry did not race up to his first day’s encouraging form. The real disappointment of the field was Lord Advocate, which was never in a likely position. Whackie was elevated from 1%17 favourite in the Great Easter Handicap to second choice in this race, but after being well placed at the straight entrance he was never likely. Listen In went to the rear early, and finished a long way back. Investors fared badly In the Autumn Nursery Handicap. Lexia led on to the course proper from Derene, Beau Jewel, Night Stalk, and Bruce, and- at the distance, Lexia still had charge from Bruce, Iron Duke and Beau Jewel with Fearless making a fast run on the outside. Derene drew on terms with Lexia a few strides from the post, and gained a head verdict, while Fearless came with a brilliant run to gain third money, a length in front of Bruce, which was closely followed, by Beau Jewel and Iron Duke. Both Essay and Palissy were slow away and were never prominent. 1 Close Finish The, closest finish ,of the day was re' served for the concluding event, the Addington Hack Handicap. Lord Broiefort was the first to show out When the field settled down. Honest Sal, Matapan, Pedantic and Eastern coin being the slowest away. Lora Broiefort was still in charge rounding the home turn and into the straight from Trueway, Lord Darnley, The Vulture, Authentic, Olga’s Choice and Silver Sal, but commenced 10 drift a furlong from home, and Authentic and The Vulture drew out from Silver Sal, Olgas Choice and Lord Broiefort, with Honest Sal putting in an appearance wide out. Authentic and The vulture were fighting out the finish when Honest Sal, still wide out, joined in with a remarkable burst of speed. The three crossed the line in a bunch. Authentic gaining a head verdict from The Vulture with Honest Sal another head away. Lalla Meer came with a late run for fourth place from Silver Sal, and Lord Broiefort, Big Top and Eastern Coin followed. Authentic had to survive .an Inquiry into alleged interference with The Vulture over a furlong from home. The stewards decided that although there was some interference it did not affect the result, but .K. Nuttall, rider of Authentic, was cautioned for careless handling of his mount. TURF GOSSIP

Typhoon’s Withdrawal The withdrawal of Typhoon from the Great Autumn Handicap caused a. good deal of disappointment among racegoers, who were anxious to see how he fared after his poor effort in the Great Easter Handicap, while many no doubt were curious as to the- attitude of the public if he had been able to win the race. Typhoon did not please his trainer after his gallop on Friday morning, but it was decided to wait until Saturday morning before making a final decision about his engagement. As he still showed signs of not being in his best order, he was taken out of the race at 11.35 a.m.

Hurdlers at Riccarton / In the absence of Fairy Bard, Prince Dolomite Was sent .Out a staunch favourite for the Peerswlck Hurdles at Riccarton on Saturday, but was never going like a winner, and finished under sufferance in third place. Paladeo went away with the early lead, and led to the six furlong post, where Rockery took charge from Roman Son. Spanish* Main, and Prince Dolomite. Rockery and Roman Son were abreast entering the straight, and over the last fence, and engaged in a long struggle home, Roman Son prov ag the bitter stayer to win in the last’- stride. Prince Dolomite was a fair third, three lengths in front of Spanish Main, with Paladeo some distance back. Chiding fell at the mile post and Test Pilot went out two fences from home, both being in the rear at the time.

Late Scratching / . With five withdrawals from the Challenge Stakes on Saturday, there were only seven starters, but three place dividends (Instead of , the statutory two for , that number) were nevertheless paW.' This was brought about by the, scratching of Campsle after her name appeared as a starter in the totalisator list, and the machine had opened The delay in withdrawing the filly was through eircumr stances preventing the trainer getting word to the course within the time allowed for scratching. Her nam6-was at ortce removed from the totalisatof face, and a refund of the few investments on her was later made, but as the machine had opened with eight starters, thus providing for three dividends, no change on that point could be made.
