OBITUARY

MB M. WALKER The death of Mr. Malcolm Walker, chief reporter of the “Taranaki Daily News,” occurred recently. Mr Walker served in the Middle East for nearly .three years and joined the staff of the “Daily News” after he returned with the first furlough draft. Bom at Wanganui in 1909, Mr Walker Was educated at the .Palmerston North Boys’ High School and, Auckland University College. Before he enlisted early in 1940 he was employed as a reporter on the staff of the “Mana-. watu Times,” Palmerston North. He sailed from New Zealand with the 25th Battalion. 2nd N.Z.E.F., in August, 1940. In the lattef part of his service in. the Middle-East lie was. appointed to the Public Relations Office, m which ■he'occupied the position of chief clerk with the rank tf'sergeant-manor. After his return to New Zealand in July. 1943, he was Attached briefly to the Publicity Department before he took Up tile' position of chief reporter of the ‘.‘Daily News” in November of that year. , . ■■ ■■'. 1 ~.. The death occurred/ to-day of Dr. Stanley Brown, a leading surgeon. ■ Born -at Temuka, he attended the Otago Medical School, and later went abroad. He served; overseas in the last wa r;. ; , v ; t Dr, Brown was deeply interested in music; and was, a former, conductor of the-Invercargill Male Choir., He was also-a keen cricketer, and had been president of the Southland Cricket Association; Before starting private practice, he was* medical superintendent of the Southland Hospital. MR S. W. FIELD The death occurred on Friday of Mr Stanley Walter Field, a partner in the firm of Field and Royds, Ltd., gram and produce merchants. Mr Field, - who was 54 years of age, was born at Lyttelton, and was educated at the Lyttelton Borough School and the Christchurch Boys’ High School. Mr Field was well known in tennis circles in the city, and for years was a prominent'member of the Linwood and United Clubs. When playing for the Liuwood Club, he twice won = the singles championship of the club, and he represented Canterbury in interprovincial contests. ; Mr Field was a keen horticulturist. For many years he took a close interest in the work of the Christchurch branch of the Y.M.C.A.
