WESTPORT BOYS’ BAND
CONCERT AT CIVIC THEATRE The Westport Boys! Band; composed of 38 talented musicians of an average age of 14 years, 'entertained, a,, big crowd at the Civic Theatre last evening with music; of a high standard. The band has just completed a tour of southern towns, and during the last :X0 days has given! concerts at Ashburton, Timaru, Waimate. Oamaru. and Dunedin. ; v .. .
The items provided last evening included Schubert’?; ‘‘Unfinished Symphony,” first , and' second movements, and the delicate- treatment of the music showed the result of careful training: Marches, waltzes, cornet duets, and descriptive items helped to make up an excellent programme, and undoubted talent was shown in cornet solos by Band Sergeant-Major K. Smith, who olayed “Bostonian” and “Facillita.” Miss L. Hay-McKenzie (soprano). Barry Samuel (baritone). N; Barton (comedian). Leslie Atkinson (’cello), and Miss Valmai Phipps (pianist) showed themselves to be young artists of ability.
