MILK BILL
Sir,—Mr Dell is again endeavouring to convince the consumers of Christchurch that the milk supplied by our vendors is unsafe. He first says the consumer can only get milk from one dairyman in one zone, as the shops supplied in each zone are also supplied by the same vendors. This is not so. For instance, in my own zone there are seven shops, and four different vendors supply them, including a pasteurising company. Since the City Council put an inspector on to sampling the milk I know quite well that more samples have been taken than ever in the history of the milk industry in Christchurch. Since the Government started to interfere with the production and distribution of milk in Christchurch, it has been responsible for eliminating some of the finest milking herds in Canterbury. Producers are turning their attention to other avenues of production whjere there is not so much red-tape—Yours, etc W. H. DAVIES. October 28, 1944. Sir, —Mr G. W. Dell, a member of the Milk Commission, is late in suggesting consideration for the consumer. In effect the Milk Bill has begun to operate in Christchurch. The new form of private enterprise is the Canterbury Dairy Farmers’ Co-operative Milk Supply Company, recognised as a supply association from October 1. But it is not too late for the Milk Bill to be explained to the public. The people of Christchurch have expressed disapproval of the principles contained in the bill on more than one occasion. In fairness to the consumer and the producer, if Mr Dell would like to have the bill debated and its weaknesses ventilated, arrangements could be made.—Yours, etc., H. BLISS. Heathcote, October 29, 1944.
