TIMARU-CHRISTCHURCH ROAD RACE D. A. MORLAND WINS First place and fastest time In the Timaru to Christchurch road race, conducted on Saturday under the auspices of the Christchurch centre of the New Zealand Cycling Union, were gained by D. A. Morland, of Christchurch. His time was shy lOmin 27sec, and he had a handicap of 7inln At 9.30 a.m, on Saturday, the limit men were sent oil from. Timaru by the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan). The morning was line, with a light northeasterly breeze. At Temuka, the 40min men had caught up with the 45min men. when they passed through the town at 10*13 a.m. Going through Winchester, H. Sutherland had a spill, but rode on to overtake his co-markers. Near Orarl, J. G. Gordon was riding alone, and at this stage the speed of the scratch men was 22 miles an hour.

When they were approaching Rangitata. the 7min men, had overtaken the lOmin men, and at Hinds the 20min, 25min, and 30min men were riding together. Mervyn Marsh had gear trouble at this stage, and soon after L. Wood had a puncture. Luke, Shaw, Andreassend, Malaquin, and Kirdy went through Winslow together, at a speed of 16 miles an hour, and they were followed by Newell and McDermott AtTinwald, Arnest had dropped R. Gluestein, and Arnst and Kirdy were still making good headway. Arnst sprinted Kirdy to the Ashburton Post Office. Three minutes later, Newell, McDermott, and R. Gluestein passed through Ashburton, followed by Shaw, Malaquin, Andreassend, and Luke at 12.21 p.m. At 12.31 p.m., W. Howison, B. Evans, D. Swanston. J. Fitzgerald, R. Sutherland, D. Morland, A. Tomson, and C. L. Gluestein were reported at Ashburton, followed by R. Flinkenberg. C. Wood. R. Smith, and P. Doyle, at a speed of about 25 miles an hour. At 12.33 p.m,, Peach and Robinson passed through Ashburton. They were followed at 12.39 p.m, by the scratch men. Although they were then riding well, they had dropped three minutes on the 7mln men.

Arnst and Kirdy were still in the lead at Chertsey. They were followed by Shaw, Malaquin, and McDermott, and, further back, a bunch of 12 riders. The scratch men were nine minutes behind near Rakaia. Newell and McDermott had had enough at Rakaia. H. J. Smither had a puncture at Bankside, and L. Ba/liss retired at Dunsandel. Knight led the scratch men through Dunsandel, and at this stage Fish (Auckland) was dropped. Clark had a puncture at Selwyn, and W. Howison had a similar mishap, -but these riders had not caught up with Arnst and Kirdy, who were still leading. R. Sutherland led a bunch of 12 riders through Burnham on -to Rolleston, where Andreassend had a heavy spill, but remounted. At Templeton, the leader was Wood.

Final placlngs at the Show Grounds, Christchurch, were as follows, times being given in parenthesis:— First prize and fastest time, D. A. Morland, 7min (shr lOmin 27sec); second prize, A J. Tomson. lOmin, (shr 13min 28sec): third, D. A. Swanston, lOmin (shr 13mln 29sec); fourth, M. J. Luke. 35min (shr 38min 30sec): fifth, B. N. Evans, 7min (shr 13min 30sec): sixth. W. J. Fitzgerald, lOmin (shr 13min 31' sec);, seventh. C. C. Wood, 15min (shr 18min 32sec); second fastest time, B, N. Evans; third fastest time, R. Sutherland: fastest junior, P. Doyle; fastest visiting rider not receiving any other prize, J. Andreassend; first rider to reach Ashburton, and oldest rider to finish the race, L. Arnst: .first Ashburton rider to reach Ashburton. F. Kirdy: first returned serviceman to finish, M. J. Luke: first visiting rider, not receiving any other prize, A. L. Moffatt; fastest time over 30 minutes. M. J. Luke.
