YOUTH DROWNED IN DREDGE POND .
SECOND TRAGEDY WITHIN’ TWO MONTHS From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, October 15. The Barrytown gold dredge pond was the scene of the second fatality within two months when on Saturday afternoon an oiler, Edward Robert Price, 17, son of Mr and Mrs Isaiah Price. 6f Tiromoana. on the Grey-mouth-Westport Coast road, was drowned. Price was working oi) a winc>j loading logs dredged up from the pond on to the barge at the time of the accident A workmate, John Crook, left Price for about 15 minutes, and on his return Price had disappeared. When a search of the dredge and the vicinity failed to reveal any sign of the youth, dragging operations commenced in the pond, and the body was recovered about 7 p.m.. about five hours after Price was last seen alive. No one saw Price fall, and .there was no evidence of how he came tp be in the pond.
An inquest was opened at Greymouth to-day before the Coroner (Mr G. G. Chisholm), and after evidence of identification had been given by Price’s father was adjourned sine die. A post-mortem examination was ordered.
The previous fatality occurred on August 23, when John William McGrath was drowned in the dredge pond. .
