LABOUR CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED
Labour candidates for the Christchurch Tramway Board and Christchurch Drainage Board elections, to be held on November 25, were announced yesterday by the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee. They are as follows, sitting members being indicated by an asterisk: Tramway Board. —Central: ’the Hon. J. K. Archer, M-L.C., Messrs T. Butterfield, J. D. Carey, H. E. Denton, *G. Manning, and E. A. Sharp. Heathcote: Mr J. S. Barr. Avon: Mr J. Sturrock. Drainage Board.—North-west; Mr J. Johnson. North-east: Mr F.' South-west: Mr A. Rennie. South-east: Mr W. P. Hickey. St. Albans:. Mr J. Shankland. Spreydoh; *Mr J. S. Barnett. Sydenham: *Mr F. M- 1 Robson Woolstori: *Mr F. Robinson. Avon: Mr J, Sturrock. Heathcote: Mr J. E. Jones. Linwood: Nurse M. C. Mackwell. Mr E. Parlane, a sitting member of the Tramway Board, and Miss Ma'bel Howard, M.P., a member of the present Drainage Board, are not seeking re-election.
DRAINAGE BOARD * NOMINATIONS
CLOSING DATE EXTENDED An extension until noon to-day of the closing time for nominations for the Christchurch Drainage Board Elections has been notified, but the nominations received up to, the previously advertised closing hour yesterday may be taken as a fair indication of the “fields” to contest the elections. There will be contests for all but two of the 12 seats, four candidates will contest the Avon sub-district, and there will be three each in the Heathcote, Sydenham "and St. Albans districts. Two sitting members so far have no opponents, Mr W. P. Glue (Riccar-ton-Fendalton), a Citizens’ Association nominee, and Mr F. Robinson (Woolston), a Labour representative. For the Avon seat. Mr W. J. Walter (Independent), the sitting member, will have three opponents, candidates put forward by the Citizens’ Association and the Labour Party, and Mr D. J. Upton. Mr F, Whiley, Mr G. Kelly, and Mr R. T. R. Lisle are the opponents for the candidates nominated by the Citizens’ Association and the Labour Party in the Sydenham, St. Albans, and Heathcote districts respectively.
. No Cards for Prisoners.—The prohibition on sending Christmas and New Year cards and calendars to prisoners of war imposed last year was to be continued this year, said the Post-master-General (the Hon. P. C. Webb) yesterday—(P.A.)
