PRICE FOR BACON CARCASES

HIGHER RATE IN SOUTH ISLAND

The question of the Jd rise for baconer pork in the South Island from 8d to 3ld a pound was discussed at a meeting of the Canterbury District Pig Council last evening. MrH. M. Pierson, superintendent of the pig industry, said that in parts pf the North Island the higher price being paid in the lijiputh Island been questioned. It was explained that the sole purpose pf the inprpase was to encourage Sputh Island farmers to breed bacon pigs. Mr D. R. Petrie said that when he had visited Nelson earlier in the year, pig farmers were receiving only 7Jd a pound for their baconer carcases at the Nelson freezing works, Stoke, instead of the nominal South Island price at that time of 8d a pound. When he had asked the reason for this he was

told that the extra 3d a pound retained by the freezing works to aid its administration. The killings a* Stoke were npt large in comparison with those in some of the bigger centres, so that the cost of killing each pig was higher. , Mr R. G. Bishop said he understood that the Jd was kept to meet the kil‘“ ing charges at the end of the year. “When the South Island price wa»raised to B}d it was definitely stipulated that the price would be for farmers in every district,” said w* Pierson.
