INDUSTRIAL AWARDS VARIED
1 EFFECT OF AUSTRALIAN COAL SHORTAGE
(Rec. 5.5 pm.) SYDNEY, Sept. 21. An order varying 52 manufacturing awards has been made by the Industrial Commission and will enable employers to stand down without pay staff rendered idle by the coal shortage. It is reported to be unlikely that existing fuel restrictions will be lifted before Christmas, in spite of improved production at the mines.
XJ.S, Ships Lost in Pacific.—A United States Navy communique states that the United States minesweeper Perry was sunk as a result of enemy action in the Palau Islands. The casualties were small. The auxiliary transport Noa'was recently sunk in the Pacific as a result of a collision with a destroyer. There were no casualties. — Washington, September 2Q.
Australian Small Arms Production.— Employment in Australian small arms factories h?s reduced from the peak figure of 11)323 persons last ye?r to 4891, said the Minister of Munitions (Mr N. J. O. Makin) in the House of Representatives. He added that production was proceeding on the basis of 25 per cent, of what these factories were designed to produce.—Canberra, (September 21.
