Lady Newall was present at a very largely attended meeting of women held in Wellington on Tuesday in connexion with Christian Order Week. The speaker was Mrs A. K. Warren, of Christchurch, who dealt with the subject "Reliigion in the Home and Kindergarten." The Hon. Mr Justice Northcroft and Mrs Northcroft left for the north last evening Mr Justice Northcroft will preside at sittings of the Supreme Court in Auckland, and Mrs Northcroft will visit her daughter in the Waikato district. Mr Justice Northcroft will return to Christchurch about the middle of next month.

Miss Mabel Howard. M.P., and Mrs D. G. Sullivan arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday. Miss C, E. Robinson (Christchurch), inspector of vocational guidance for New Zealand, was the guest speaker at the weekly luncheon of the Invercargill Rotary Club on Tuesday. At the monthly meeting of the Home Economics Association, held yesterday an interesting talk on Hebridean music was given by Mrs P. A. le Brun, who sang several Hebridean songs to illustrate her remarks. Miss S. McKee presided over a good attendance, and Mrs G. Carton announced that the gardening circle would hold a flower show next month.

The sewing circle of the Catholic Women's League, which gives valuable help to many organisations in the city, held its annual exhibition of work at “Maryknoll” Cashel street. The president, Mrs F. C. Delany, welcomed the guests, particularly' the Mayoress, Miss E. Couzins, and Mrs H. S. Feast, wife of the Town Clerk. Miss Couzins congratulated members on the splendid display of serviceable garments and thanked them for their useful work in the community. Brisk business was done at the sales table.

The monthly, meeting of the Riccarlon Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs G. Cowie, 70 Straven road. Mrs R. K, Merton presided, and Mr W. S. Young gave much useful information on the culture of bulbs. A competition for a small bowl of spring flowers was won by Mrs Rowell, with Mrs J. C. Williamson second and Mrs R. A. Keir third. In the novice section the winners were Mrs H. M. Taylor and Mrs R. S. Kent.

A message from London dated September 17 announces that A.T.S. girls are attending domestic science courses designed to help them run homes when they leave the Army. At a special training centre they are using new labour-saving devices which wdll be marketed for the first time after the war. Cookery lessons range from mixing a salad to the preparation of a sixcourse dinner. The girls are also being taught plumbing, carpentry, dressmaking. woodwork, modelling, and appreciation of the arts.

A pleasantly varied programme was provided at the Canterbury Women’s Club last evening, when Mrs R. J. McLaren was hostess and her specially invited guests were Mrs James Murphy and members of her Victory knitting circle, and nurses of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association. Mrs A; Sandston’s films of her garden' at Mount Pleasant, and of the centennial procession in Christchurch, were screened by Mr A. H. Marker, Mrs McLaren gave an interesting account of the early life of Mr Winston Churchill, songs were sung by the four Geary sisters, and a sketch was presented by Mrs McLaren and Mrs H. Wyatt. After the patriotic concert in the Civic Theatre, the two visiting artists. Miss Mary Pratt and Mr Henri Penn, with other performers, visited the .Club and were entertained at supper.,

A former pupil of the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, Miss Rua Isobel Gardner, M.A., of Wellington, has been appointed by the Auckland Grammar School Board to be headmistress of the school in succession to Miss E. M. Johnston, M.A., who will retire in December after 19 years’ service. Miss Gardner has spent , nearly the whole of her teaching career on the staff of the Wellington East Girls’ College, which she joined in 1925. After leaving the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, where she was school games captain and a prefect, she attended Victoria University College. She graduated B.A. in 1922 and M.A. the following year, with honours in philosophy. In 1924 she took a course at the Wellington Training College and did relieving work lor a short period at the Wairarapa High School. She obtained the university diploma in education the same year. Miss Gardner is a member of the Federation of University Women and a ndmber of other educational and social organisations in Wellington.

October 9, 10, and 12 will be the dates of a mannequin parade being held to aid the R.S.A. Sick and Wounded Fund in D.l.C.’s tearoom. It is to be presented by D.I.G. and J. C. Williamson, Ltd., in conjunction with the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association. All fashions to be shown will be fifie examples of New Zealand industry, manufacture, and ingenuity of design. They will be worn.by the five leading feminine players of the J. C. Williamson Comedy Company. Miss Neva Carr-Glyn and Misses Bettina Welch. June Mendoza, Ruth Montgomerie, and Diana Craig. Miss Lily Moore, also a well-known member of the company, will be compere of the parade. As it is some considerable time since such an event has been staged in Christchurch, interest and enthusiasm is already widespread, and it is hoped that this worthy R.S.A. fund- will benefit largely by its presentation.
