SPECIAL ARMOURED VEHICLE
USE AGAINST GERMAN COAST DEFENCES (8.0. W.) RUGBY. Sept. 19. Many devices, some of which are still secret have been developed to assist in breaching the German defences in western Europe, but by no means an of them have yet been employed against the enemy. The initial breach effected in the coastal defences at the outset of the invasion was largely due to the special Armoured Vehicle. Royal Engineers (Avre). The vehicle generally is similar to the Churchill tank, but the interior is specially designed to accommodate a crew of engineers, together with specially safeguarded explosive charges for use in demolitions. The Avre is able to hurl a charge containing many times the weight of explosive carried by any other known projectile of similar dimensions against concrete or masonry obstacles. This bomb has been nicknamed the “flying dustbin.”
