, The Marchioness of Hartington, whose husband has been killed on active service ■in Normandy, was formerly Miss Kathleen Kennedy. She is the second daughter of Mr Joseph Kennedy, formerly United States Ambassador to Britain, and her marriage took place in London last May. The Marquess of Hartington. who was in his twenty-seventh year, was the elder son of the tenth Duke of Devonshire and was heir to the title. Mrs C. J. Thornton presided at a well-attended meeting of the Next of Kin Society yesterday at the Welcome Club. Musical items were given by Mrs Olds, Mrs Le Brun. and Mrs R; Voller. Recitations were given by Mrs S. J. Thompson. . Mrs A. J. Petrie (Christchurch), who has been touring the West Coast and addressing branches of the Mothers’ Union, gave an interesting talk on the work of the union to members of the Otira branch recently. During the afternoon a monetary gift was presented to the Rev. R. P. Taylor by the enrolling member (Mrs Baxter), on behalf of the union and congregation of St. Christopher's Church, in appreciation of his three years’ work in the parish, particularly in Otira. Mr Alexander W. G. H. Grantham, C.M.G., who has been appointed Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, is 45 years old. His wife is an American, formerly Miss Maurine Samson, of San Francisco. They were married in 1925, and have no children. Mr Grantham graduated Master of Arts at Pembroke College. Cambridge, and was called to the Bar, Inner Temple, in 1934. He had lived in Hong Kong, Bermuda, and Jamaica before taking up his last post of Chief Secretary to the Government of Nigeria. Masses of spring flowers brightened the Jellicoe Hall yesterday afternoon when the Christchurch committee of the Sir Arthur Pearson Memorial fund for the Blind gave a pleasant party at which the guests of honour were the blind from the city and suburbs anpl from some country districts. These gatherings are held quarterly and many of the guests come from long distances to attend them, to - meet old friends and to renew acquaintances. The guests were welcomed by the chairman of the committee, Mr H. Holland, who paid a tribute to the work done by the secretary, Mr W. T. Woods, and thanked the committee of “The Clothes Shop” for providing coal during the winter for the needy blind and an invalid lady, who had made a number of lavender bags for distribution amongst blind persons. A short talk was given by Canon Stephen Parr, and community singing was led by Mr H. Lee, with Mrs D. Coles as pianist. Six nurses who had trained at the Timaru Public Hospital were presented with their medals by the matron (Miss M. L. Lindsay) at a graduation ceremony at the nurses’ home, Timaru. this week. The medical superintendent (Dr. J. C. McKenzie) presided and welcomed the guests of honour, who included Miss M. Barnett (Health Department), Miss F. L. Adams (representing the Trained Nurses’ Association). Mr H. J. Clark, and other members of the South Canterbury Hospital Board, and the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs A. E. S. Hanan). Those who received their medals were Nurses V. Schroder, J. Lemon. M. Thompson, H. Mackenzie, L. Sellwood, and L. Jerman. Nurses J. Mackenzie, L. Mulcock, E. Birchall, and M. Moyne will receive theirs at a later date. A fashion event of interest to all Christchurch women will be the Mannequin Parade to be presented in conjunction with the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association by D.I.C. and J. C. Williamson. Ltd., in D.l.C.’s Tearoom on October 9, 10, and 12. The parade will feature New 1 Zealandmade fashions worn by the leading feminine cast of the J. C. Williamson Comedy Company, and will be compered by Lily Moore, also a member of the company. Proceeds from this event are to aid the R.S.A.
