STATE OF TRAM TRACKS
COUNCILLOR REPLIES TO BOARD * ft JUSTICE OF COMPLAINT RECOGNISED ” “I am glad to find that the Tramway Board, while claiming to have its tracks in better reps ir vhari those ol any other centre in New Zealand, has recognised the justice of my complaint at the last meeting of the City Council. The board’s workmen are to-day patching the holes in Ferry road which were the subject of my complaint,” said Cr. L. G, Amos yesterday in commenting on statements made at the meeting of the board on Monday. A reporter of “The Press accompanied Cr, Amos on an inspection of the tracks in Ferry-road and on the Fendalton line. On Ferry road, beyond the point where workmen were patching holes in the paving with tarred gravel, there were numerous holes beside the'rails of an inch to an inch and a half in depth. In places the rail surface was an inch and a half below the level of the adjacent road surface, and Cr. Amos pointed out that in either case it was a danger to cyclists. Near Wilson’s rpad a transverse drainage grill was found to be mong than an inch above the level of the rail surface and there was another hole, an inch and a half deep, beside it. On the Fendalton line, near Tonbridge street, a water-filled hole more than two feet long was found to be three inches deep in places. Further rough sections were pointed out near Wairarapa terrace. “We all know that the Tramway/ Board, like everybody else, is having its difficulties, and I raised the question at the council meeting only to see whether something could be done tb> improve things,” said Cr, Amos. “If the board finds any comfort in the belief that things are worse in other centres it is entitled to it, but the public of Christchurch have a right to.expect that all that can be done with the men and material available is done. The repairs now being made in Ferry road are long overdue."
