He took up racing for a career In the 1923-24 season, being apprenticed to D Kemp at Woodville, and In 1926-27 was granted a full Jockey’s licence Increasing weight compelled him to turn his attention to hurdle and steeplechase riding, and for some time before taking out a trainer’s licence In 1936 he was head lad for L. G. Morris, and also did a limited amount of riding, among his successful mounts being on Clarion Call when he won his first Wanganui Steeplechase In 1937. TROTTING NOTES Nominations Close Nominations for all events at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held at Addington on October 7 will close it 5 o.m. to-day (Thursday). —6 Entries Close Entries for the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders’ Association’s trials at New Brighton next Tuesday close with the Secretary, P.O. Box 499, Christchurch, at 8 p.m. to-morrow. —1 Pacers at Ashburton Traverse was the outstanding* pacer In both trotting events at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting, and in each of his races he registered exceptionally fast time. From a smin Isec mark in the Selma Handicap he recorded 4mln 30 4-ssec, and although the Ashburton track is probably the best winter course in New Zealand, this represented a particularly fine effort Assessed at 3min 38sec for a mile and a half in the Rakaia Handicap, Traverse did 3mln 19 3-ssec. He won both races very easily, and apparently could have Improved upon the fast times recorded. A Promising Pacer Water Ranger, a four-year-old colt by Sandydale from Gentle Oro, owned and trained at Methven by P. G. O'Reilly, has had little experience of race, conditions, and there was some merit in his second to Traverse in the Selma Handicap at Ashburton last Saturday Gentle Oro, who died three years ago, was a well-bred mare by Rey de Oro —Karamu, by Logan Pointer—Gentle Ida, by Franz, a brother to Fritz, a champion trotter about 40 years ago. Water Ranger will have his next race at the Methven meeting next week, and handicapped on 4min 3sec for a mile and five furlongs in the Westward Ho Handicap, he may be one of the favourites. He has also been entered for the Mount Harding Handicap, 3rnin Msec class, of a mile and five f irlongs, and a win in the earlier race will still leave him on the limit.
