The Secretary of State for India (Mr L. S. Amery) on September. 12 visited Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg at a New Zealand hospital. After inspecting the hospital and speaking to several patients, some of them English and Indian, Mr Amery had lunch at divisional headquarters with senior officers.—(N.Z.E.F. war correspondent.) Lieutenant G. J. Macdonald, D.S.C. and two Bars, R.N.Z.N.V.R., of Wellington, has been awarded the D.S.O. Lieutenant Macdonald was mobilised on the outbreak of war, being then an active member of the Wellington division of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve. After serving as a rating he quickly gained promotion to commissioned rank. As he was already familiar with navigation in narrow seas and handling small craft,-he received specialised training in coastal forces. Since then, nearly four years ago, he has taken part in many encounters with the enemy. Lieutenant Macdonald is a son of Mr J, W. Macdonald. of the Government Life Insurance Department, Wellington. Lieutenant Macdonald was mentioned; in the cable news yesterday as having led an attack on an enemy convoy.
