SCHEME TO RAISE FUNDS
, ♦— — PRESIDENT OF FOOTBALL CLUB FINED (P.A.) DUNEDIN, July 10. The president of the Dunedin Football Club, John Leo Dawkins, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with publishing handbills inviting persons to make bets on the result of horse The scheme was known as “green picks,” whereby each entrant selected one horse in each of eight races and was awarded points according to the success of his selections. It was stated by Chief-Detective Holmes to have been in operation for some time. Complaints had come through members of the club who disapproved of the practice. For the defence, it was stated that some enthusiasts in the club had hit on a scheme to raise funds to build a pavilion. „ The Magistrate (Mr H. W. Bundle. S.M.) remarked that it was unfortunate that a sporting body with such a good record should, attempt to gam money from the gullible public by such doubtful means. He imposed a fine of £7 10s with costs.
