TURF GOSSIP

Foxiana Scratched Foxiana pulled up well after a searching trial ever the steeplechase fences on Thursday. Yesterday, however, he \'ima lame after work and last night the Manawatu Racing Club announced he had been scratched for to-day's steeplechase,— (P.A.)

Not Starting Although Sir Saladm was a telegraphed acceptor for two races at Wingatui to-day, he is carded for only the short race, and is not likely to be produced, as he is still suffering from his mishap last Saturday. First Appearances Some fresh horses will be seen out at Wingatui to-day. including the Christ-church-owned but Wingatui-trained Monetary and Notary. Others are Salma Lake, Slamannan. Gay Lancer, Prize Ring, and Whirr. Horses with two engagemonts on the card are Dark OISOKilcato, Salabond, Hearth, Silver Lily, Bridgehead. Gay Lancer. Foxhaven Sir Saladln, Maggiore, Sham Boy, Fairy Bard,' Pay Book, and Patria. Likely Favourites Two cf the contestants in the Montgomery Hack Handicap at Wingatui today are Guile and Prize Ring, who were not produced on the second day of the winter meeting because of the heavy track. Guile’s effort on . the first day in acting as runner-up to Crinkle oyer seven furlongs after a slow beginning will entitle her to be w.ell supported. Prize Ring will be making his first appearance over the three days, and if he should be paraded to-day, he is certain. to dispute favouritism with the Riccarton filly.

Missed an Outing Anglo-French was not accepted for In to-day’s steeplechase at Wingatui, so has missed the chance of a run on any of the three days’ racing. His trainer Mr W E Hazlett, intends to move his team to Washdyke next week, and no doubt will make every effort to attend the Wellington meeting next month. The stable will be represented to-day by True Range again, who may be troubled on this occasion by his big weight. Others on the card from the team are Jack o Lantern and Inscrutable, who .both filled second berths last Monday and are likely improvers.

Bracketed , , . „ Whirr was also not produced at the winter meeting at Wingatui because of the going, but if the conditions should be more favourable to-day he is to take his place, and will be bracketed with Slayer. Whirr will be having his first race since he won the Wingatui Steeplechase on June 5 last year, when he easily beat Gay Boa and Anglo-French. Slayer did not go far enough on Monday to give any line as to probable improvement, but as he filled second place to True Range on the first day after being a long way back, he will have to be kept in view. Should these two horses race well they will also probably be nominated for Trentham. Surprise Acceptor ... u , Sir Saladln was reported to be in a fairly bad way last week-end after mis mishap at the post at Wingatui on Saturday, but has evidently made a good recovery, as he figures in two races to-day. Sir Saladin was confidently supported in that race, and provided he has not received any serious set-back, he will no doubt again have a strong following. A high opinion is held of this Salmagundi five-year-old in southern circles.

Accounts Balanced , , . , The two successes of Arabian Night at Wineatul served to compensate his owner, Mr A. N. Smith, for the long sequence of failures recorded against him. In spite of his record, Mr Smith pluckily held on to him. and decided some weeks back to try him as a hurdler. , The gelding showed promise in the schooling given him, but as he also showed*some improvement in his galloping, the idea of racing him over the battens was delayed, and he ..was kept to flat racing at the meeting, with pleasant results. Arabian Night has paid good dividends for each of his three wins to date, and has earned close on £BOO in stakes, but as he has raced fairly extensively and has done a good deal of travel ling without any return, he is not much on the credit side.
