THE EMPIRE
Sir,—The Rev. J. Lawson Robinson, speaking in the Cathedral yesterday, was' careful to point out that His Majesty the King had made no mention of the glories of the Empire, past, present, or future. Do I detect some misgiving in Mr Robinson’s mind about the ethics of Empire? And was there a hint that the King may feel the same uneasiness? If there was, I think he was mistaken. The King would certainly echo, perhaps less bluntly, Mr Churchill’s diction: “What we have we hold,’’ which is only another way of saying that one of the aims of this war is the preservation of the British Empire, and if possible (as with the last war) its incidental aggrandisement. —Yours, etc., BASIL DOWLING. June 9, 1944.
