FOOD DEPOT FOR PETS
SALE OF HORSE FLESH PERMITTED Permission for the sale of horse flesh, lights, and, paunches, at a food depot for pets in Christchurch has been given by the Government. This was announced yesterday by the Controller of the Animals’ A.R.P. Unit of the E.P.S. (Mrs M. Christmas-Harvey), who said that arrangements for opening the depot had been made after representatives of the Food Controller (Mr J. E. Thomas) had conferred with members of the unit and the president of the New Zealand Master Butchers’ Federation (Mr T. W. Stephenson), Mrs Christmas-Harvey said that the depot would be opened on Monday by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) at the Animals’ A.R.P. headquarters in Colombo street. The depot would be open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mr Stephenson had been instrumental in obtaining horse flesh, and the Government had agreed to release, lights and paunches for sale. Mrs Christmas-Harvey added that as a result of the change in the meat rationing system 60 cats and dogs had to be destroyed by the Animals’ A.R.P. Unit, nine of .them in one day. - •
