LETTUCE BOUGHT BY RETAILERS

DELIVERY WITHOUT CASES Lettuce and spinach were again 'old under normal bidding at auction yesterday for the first time since June 1, when retailers declined to buy these greens in cased lots on which an additional charge of 3d was made. According to Mr G. A. Knowles, president of the Canterbury Commercial Gardeners’ Association, the dispute about the extra case charge has not been settled, sales proceeding under an agreement that the buyers should not take away the containers in which lettuce and spinach were offered.

The significant feature of the agreement was that the retailers had recognised the eases as the property of (he growers, said Mr Knowles, and had agreed that delivery should not be taken of the greens concerned by substituting a case for that in which ihe lettuce or spinach were sold. The question of the case charge would probably be discussed from a national viewpoint shortly. A mass meeting of retailers has been called for Monday evening to discuss the matter. As no lettuces had been sold for more than a week, few lots were offered yesterday morning, and prices ranged up to 8s 6d a dozen.
