An informative and entertaining address on bog-gardens, rock gardens, and ponds in gardens was given yesterday afternoon to the Garden Circle of the Canterbury Women's Club by the Rev Father Taylor, who traced the life history of many plants and gave practical advice on the making of different kinds of gardens. Mrs A. E. G. Lyttle, convener of the circle, thanked the speaker for his helpful talk. The national savings stamps shield was recently held by Lionel street, Dallington, and is now held by the north end of Puriri street, Riccarlon This is the first lime that either of these districts has won the shield. The names of these streets have been inscribed on the honours board, above the posting boxes at the main post office. In answer to a request from the London headquarters, the Wellington branch of the Victoria League is to send written descriptions of its various activities to the London league. As a beginning, the work of the toy circle will be described and a representative of the younger contingent will explain how the younger members entertain disabled returned servicemen. A letter from Mrs Winston Churchill, in her capacity as president of the British Young Women’s Christian Association War-Time Fund, has been received by the National Patriotic Fund Board in Wellington through the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, Mr W. J Jordan, expressing thanks and appreciation tor a contribution of £250 made by the board on behalf of the people of New Zealand to The Y.W.C.A Fund. Mrs Churchill’s appeal was for funds to be used for work with women of His Majesty’s forces abroad. The question of the admission of women to the eldership of the Presbyterian Church, which was raised in the General Assembly, is now being discussed in church courts throughout the Dominion. The same question is also under discussion by the Church of Scotland. The journal of the New Zea land Presbyterian Church, the “Outlook,” reports that seven Scottish presbyteries have agreed to the proposal by majority votes.

Chief Commander (Mrs) Vida Eliza Jowelt, who has been created an officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, before being selected to organise and control the New Zealand Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in July, 1942, was associated with the Women’s War Service Auxiliary, being a member of the selection board She was also for some years president of the Wellington branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs Jowelt comes from the West Coast and received part of her education at Nelson Girls’ College, Nelson. Mrs Flower presided at a gathering of members of the Now Brighton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union arranged to celebrate the union's thirty-third birthday. Items were given by Mrs Griffiths, Miss Gimlott. Mrs Boyce. Mrs Middleton, Mrs McKenna, and Mrs Greaves. Greetings were received from the Christchurch. North Brighton. Opawa, Papanui, Woolston, Linwood, and Riccarton unions.

The fifth annual meeting of the North Christchurch Garden Club was hold at the home of Mrs C. S. Thompson, Fitzgerald street. Ollicers were elected as follows:—president, Mrs T. Prendergast; vice-presidents, Mesdames B. O. Moore and G. C Bashford; secretary. Mrs E. J. Ward; committee, Mesdames W. Beanland, A. Colerqan. C. S. Thompson. A. G. Lake, and Miss Johnson Silver cups for highest points in decorative, cut bloom, and vegetable classes were won by Mesdames Prendergast (2) and Carter respectively, whlie Mrs Thompson won the Class B competition. Helping the hostess were Mesdames Gray, Lake, Carter, Cooper, and Barker. An evening social was held in the Woolston Bowling Club’s pavilion where prizes won during the season were presented. Musical items wore given by Misses E. Makin, T. and B. Ancall, R. Stanley, Mrs Cruikshanks. and Mr Wright, and recitations by Messrs Hawkins and McCormack. Hungerford, who is retiring from her position with the Health Department in Christchurch. Miss Hungerford spent some years in the department, and then took up private nursing. She returned to the department 18 years ago, and during all those years has given devoted service to the public. That her work has been appreciated was shown by the size and representative nature of the farewell party. Amongst the guests were Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, former District Medical Officer, Dr. J. H. Blakelock. District Medical Officer, Mr Allard (headmaster of Opawa School), Mr Mackie (headmaster of Phillipstown School), Mrs Findlay (matron, Burwood Girls’ Home). Miss E. Cardale (organiser Society for Protection of Women and Children), Miss N Houghton (secretary, Cholmondeley Home), Mr J. W. Huggins (Chief City Inspector). Mrs W. Mackay (representing the Crippled Children Society), Dr. Dorothy Simpson. Dr. Helen Field, and Mr Pickering (Health Department). Sister Murray (dental department. Christchurch Hospital) and representatives of the E.P.S. and different branches of welfare work. Miss A. Buckley, formerly chief nurse inspector, presented Miss Hungerford with a cheque from her many friends and wished her many happy years of retirement.
